Demokrative is the Swiss cooperation partner in the project DEMOGAMES 'Analog and Digital Game-Based-Learning Tools for Youth Work'. Demogames builds on our project Lets' Play Democracy Barometer, is also based on the didactic approach of game-based learning and applies it in the field of democracy education.

Game based learning tools are suitable for creating interactive learning environments, e.g. in non-formal youth work. The games being developed in the course of Demogames are intended to be used for civic education and in particular to promote competences for a democratic culture, which are described in the Council of Europe's reference framework.

DEMOGAMES is a project of six partner organisations from five countries and is co-financed for the period 2019-2022 by the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union. The main outcome of the project will be a Democracy Box (D-BOX) with analogue and digital games for educational funded Erasmus

Project news

  • We are happy to invite interested persons to take part in online activities on learning about, for, and through democracy with analog games in June 2021. Please download here the [Call for Participants].
The activity will take place place from June 7th to 12th, 2021, in Mühlhausen, Germany.
  • The games are currently being developed and various prototypes are being tested. It is expected that the first games will be available for testing in educational contexts in summer 2021.

The games

The goal of the project is to develop several analog and digital democracy games, which will form the “Democracy Game Box” (D-BOX). The games can be use by practitioners (youth workers, trainers, and teachers) to teach democracy from different perspectives and to engage young people in a participatory way. Training materials for practitioners will be made available with the D-BOX, including examples and exercises of how to use the democracy games.

Currently several analogue games and digital games are in the development stage. These games deal with topics like formal aspects of democracy (i.e. democratic processes and institutions) as well as the importance of democratic norms and values to animate and breath life in democratic structures. We work on dice, board, card and role-playing games, as well as combinations. The duration of the individual games is between 20 and 60 minutes.
